It organises small groups of semi-skilled and skilled artisans with the aim of promoting and developing cottage industries, improving economic and social welfare and providing fair wages. These groups are located all over India and some have now become independent artisans in their own community.

This fair trade block puzzle is made in Sri Lanka by Lanka Kade, a company whose aim is to provide continual employment throughout the year for each group of artisans and their families. They employ a full-time representative to uphold their values: a safe and pleasant working environment, equal opportunities, good rates of pay, prompt payment for goods and a quality product at a fair price. In addition, this product is made of rubber wood sourced from exhausted rubber plantations that are replanted every 1015 years, so it's eco-friendly too!

With this mind-bender you have a wooden puzzle made up from wooden balls and criss-crossed interlocking sticks. Your job is to destroy it into smaller pieces and then work out how on earth it takes its original form again. Instructions not included!

They buy direct from the artisans, which cuts out the middleman and means the artisans are receiving around four times the price for their craftsmanship than they otherwise would. In addition, all Siiren products are made of wood taken from proven sustainable sources, with a required unique stamp and serial number which ensures that the wood is under legal and enviromental control, so they're eco-friendly too!

This item is made by Asha Handicrafts. Asha represents more than 6,500 artisans in 10 states of India. 'Asha' means 'hope' in Sanskrit. It aims to sustain the marketing ability of individual and family based artisans. It is a not-for-profit organisation which works to ensure that benefits of handicraft production reach the craftspeople themselves, by buying directly from the artisan groups and offering advance payments on orders.

Asha provides training and teaching facilities in tailoring and metal work, thereby establishing new local groups of craftsmen. It also provides educational assistance for children of the producers, medical check ups and treatment and savings programs for artisans and spouses.
